Since the terrain can be hard and the days long, hikers on these treks should be in good physical condition and have some previous mountain walking experience. Steep climbing may be involved, although it is never necessary to use ropes. Treks at this level can he arranged for periods of 16 to 21 days. Typically, a gradual ascent through a green river valley will lead you up to a number of high passes, where you will reach the altitude of 5416m. Often times, you will get a close insight into the Tibetan culture. Participants should expect to trek above 5416m/17872ft.

Mustang Trekking semi-autonomous and heavily Tibetan influenced region was described by Til man as fascinatingly ugly country, the more fascinating for being so little known indeed, the trek to Lo Manthang is through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill, panoramic view of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several others peaks make your trek memorable.

This trek begins from Jomsom – accessible by air from Pokhara to Jomsom or accessible by bus to Jomsom, Upper Mustang is also known as The last forbidden kingdom of Nepal.

Equipment for Mustang Trekking

Recheck your Equipment after planning to Mustang Trekking, Make sure you have enough gear to be warm and comfortable but without overloading. Usually, you will experience warm days and cold nights depending on altitude and the time of year,

For footwear, best walking boots with suitable ankle support that have been worn-in prior to the trek, and which are waterproof, warm socks, Gaiters for the winter season, loose casual trousers, Thermal Leggings, a Long skirt for women, trousers, and Waterproof Trousers.

Day To Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), Transfer by Private car to Hotel Stay overnight on B/B basis.

Day 2: Full day Kathmandu sightseeing (world heritage sites)

Day 3: Drive by tourist bus 6 hours Pokhara lakeside overnight at hotel on b/b basis.

Day 4: Flight to Jomsom, trek to Kagbeni

Day 5: Special permit check and Tre to Chhusang

Day 6: Trek to Syanbochen (3475m/11,398ft) stay there overnight at the lodge

Day 7: Trek to Ghaymi (3520m/11,546ft) after 5/6 hours walking

Day 8: Trek to Tsarang overnight at the lodge on FB basis.

Day 9: Trek to Lo-Mangthang

Day 10: Explore the surrounding areas.

Day 11: Trek Back to Ghar Gompa which is also an interesting place to explore

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arriving at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), you will be met by a Nepal wilderness trekking airport representative. Transfer by Private car/ van (depends on group size)to the selected hotel at Thamel in Kathmandu (1290m. /4273ft) Stay overnight on B/B basis.
  • Day 2: Full day Kathmandu sightseeing (world heritages sites) - Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple, soyambu nath (monkey temple) by private car/van (depends on group size) and tour guide.Stay at the same hotel on B/B basis.
  • Day 3: With a morning wake up, your guide will pick you up and transfer to the tourist bus station and drive tourist bus 6 hours through the beautiful river view and Nepalese countryside to reach the Pokhara lakeside (823m/2,700ft) and transfer to the selected hotel and rest of the time explore the surrounding lakeside areas and stay
    overnight at hotel on b/b basis.
  • Day 4: after an early breakfast transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Jomsom, a super scenic flight of 25 minutes brings you at Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang. This is a large town. It is also a major village on the Kaligandaki area linking the age old Trans-Himalayan Salt Trade route to Tibet. From Jomsom onwards it is very windy in the afternoon, the trek continues on the gradual path on the Kali Gandaki river bed for about 3 hours and finally reaching at Ekley-Bhatti village. After good stop here an hour of easy walk reaches you to Kagbeni
    (2,858m/9,375ft), which lies at the bank of two rivers. Kagbeni, an interesting windswept village situated on the main age old Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via Upper Mustang area. On arrival, check in the hotel with the afternoon free for a stroll around the village. Stay there overnight at Lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 5: Our Trek starts with a special permit check up and onwards to the riverbank of Kaligandaki upstream. During the walk, we have the scenic picturesque place to stop through the sandy and windy trails. This trail follows the up and
    downhill. Firstly we will reach at Tangbe village with crops field. From here we trek forward to Chhusang after 1½ hour walk and crossing the river head up to the huge red chunk of the conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. We head on to small ridges reach at Chele village (3050m/10,004ft) after 18 kilometres ( 5 hours walking) then stay there overnight at Lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 6: Today, we start our trek again and walk further to Elko Bhatti. We will climb to Taklam La Pass (3,624m/11,923 ft) through plateaus and narrow stretches with views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang, Nilgiri and Damodar Danda. Further, descends a little to the village of Samar for our lunch. Further walk around 3 hrs similar walk will reach you at Syanbochen (3475m/11,398ft) after 6 hours walking (8 km.) then stay there overnight at the lodge on FB basis.Remaining time explore the surrounding area.
  • Day 7: After breakfast, we trek uphill to the Yamda La (3,850m /12,667ft) passing few teahouses, shortens and local villages which are like Tibetan style of houses with open Varanda, and crosses over a few other passes. The long climb will be to Nyi Pass (4,010m/13,193ft) after lunch, we descend to our overnight stop at Ghaymi (3520m/11,546ft) after 5/6 hours walking (12 km.). Then stay there overnight at Lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 8: We start trek after breakfast with a pleasant walk and easily get to the Charming (3500m/11,480ft) 6 hours walking for the overnight. After crossing Ghaymi Khola, the trail climbs to a plateau and passes beside a very long Mani wall (Secret stone wall of the Buddhism). From the end of the wall, the trail heads east to Tsarang after 11 kilometres up and down then stay there overnight at the lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 9: Today, we trek to Lo-Mangthang with a magnificent view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak. The trail first descends to Tsarang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river. Further, the trail ascends gently to the 3,850m windy pass of Lo, from where you can see the Lo-Mangthang Valley (3700m/12,136ft). While descending to Lo-Mangthang, views of the walled city appear magnificent with its hills on the Tibetan Border. We stay there overnight at the lodge on FB basis. Rest of the time explores the surrounding area.
  • Day 10: Today you may have many choices to explore the surrounding areas. Visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. Namgyal Gompa situates on a hilltop, which serves as an important monastery of the local community and also as a local
    court. After visiting Namgyal Gompa continue the tour to Tingkhar, which is a village of around 40 houses, the last main village to the north-west of Lo-Mangthang and stroll back to camp. Or you may have another option to visit the Tall Champa Lakhang God house the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Entrance Hal which are the main attraction of this town. Another attraction is the four- story building of the Raja's palace as well as the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalaya. The interesting place where you may not tired to explore more and more. There are many places to explore and manage your time to explore the places. Every monastery requires the donations and entry fees which are made by your own. Stay at same lodge overnight on FB basis.
  • Day 11: After a the at Lo-Mangthang we back to Ghar Gompa which is also an interesting place to explore the local area after 4/5 hours walking. During the walk you will suffer the dusty wind and as suggested to walk in the
    morning. Stay there overnight at the lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 12: Today, we will back to Ghiling (3806m/12,484ft) as our journey for our overnight stay after a long walk 5-6 hours. After arrival and lunch enjoy the day explore the area but it will be dusty better to walk in the evening time. Stay there overnight at a lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 13: We re-track back to Chele (3050m/10,004ft) for the overnight stop after 5 hrs walking. You will have the scenery during the journey with a Himalayan view. Enjoy your trip and overnight at the lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 14: Today, we will have the last day trek as well as long. It is better to walk early start as before and trek to Kagbeni finished the upper Mustang trails and join to the normal as Annapurna circuit trek. After lunch at Kagbeni will head on to Jomsom (2700/8,856ft) 2/3 hours walking then stay there overnight at the lodge on FB basis.
  • Day 15: This, morning, after breakfast we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara. This is a dramatic flight between gorge of the two huge mountains Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara, airport guide
    will transfer to Hotel Panorama point then stay there on b/b plan. rest of time explore the lake.
  • Day 16: Morning we will drive tourist bus back through the scenic countryside and en route will stop for breakfast and lunch. It takes 7 hours back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu, the guide will transfer to the selected hotel on b/b plan.
  • Day 17: departure to your home country,
