Khopra Danda Trek Nepal – A Peaceful Alternative to Annapurna Base Camp

Khopra Danda Trek, also recognized as Khopra Ridge Trek, stands as a hidden gem within the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek is gaining popularity slowly, known for its remote and off-the-beaten-path experience, providing breathtaking views of the Annapurna mountain range.

The Khopra Danda Trek offers a magnificent, eco-friendly nature alternative trek between Annapurna Base Camp and the Jomsom-Muktinath Trek trail. Khopra Danda trekking is a newly opened trek by Mahabir Poon and is also known as the Khopra Ridge trek. Khopra Ridge offers breathtaking views of Mt Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, and Dhampus Peak, as well as one of the most spectacular valleys on the Kali Gandaki River, which can be seen from this trek. Khayer Barahi Temple or Khayer Lake, Narchyang village, Tatopani, and Ghandruk village are the major attractions of this trek.

The Khopra Danda trek itinerary usually takes 9-12 days, depending on the route and starting point. The trek begins from Nayapul and passes through several traditional Gurung and Magar villages and rhododendron forests. One of the attractions of the trek is visiting Khayer Lake, a high-altitude lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

Day excursion from Khopra Danda to Khayer Lake

Khayer Lake is one of the sacred lakes that lie behind Annapurna II. Khayer Lake is a memorable adventure day trip from the Khopra Danda trek. Kayaker Lake is (4500 meters) above sea level, one of the most scenic, blue-colored lakes at the foot of Annapurna South, and is the main attraction of this trek. When hiking to Khayer Lake from Khopradanda, the journey required a six to seven-hour hike, up and down, and bringing a packed lunch and water.

The Khopra Ridge Hotel is the starting point of the Khayer Lake day hike, which is quite challenging. You will pass waterfalls, snowlands, and drylands on your way to Holy Khayer Lake. The lake is surrounded by peaks and glaciers, with a small temple dedicated to Khayer Barahai at Khayer Lake. There are pilgrimage activities there for the Magar and Hindu communities. During the Janai Purnima, many Hindu devotees come here to receive blessings. In your journey, you can see shepherds in the brown and barren landscape. Shepherds also sacrifice sheep at the Baraha Temple.

The best time to visit Khayer Lake day hike from the Khopra Danda is during the spring and autumn seasons, when the weather is dry and clear, and the views are at their best. The trek is considered to be a moderate trek, suitable for trekkers with some previous trekking experience.

Khopra Danda accommodations

Swanta, Christibung, and Khopra Danda have 2 to 3 lodges; each lodge has 5 to 7 rooms, and each room has 2 to 4 beds and an excellent heater inside the dining hall. Hence, a group of 6 to 10 people can stay in the same lodge with ease. Sometimes, due to large groups or late bookings, Nepal Wilderness Trekking (Pvt) has all the lodge phone numbers for the Khopra Danda Khayer Lake Trekking route, Swanta, Upper Christibung, and Khopra Danda. After we confirm your trip, we inform them early and book the rooms.

Khopra Trek Meal Types

It’s worth mentioning that the meals at Khopra Danda Trek (Khayer Lake) are sourced organically from local villages. However, the menu might be less diverse in comparison to those at Annapurna Base Camp and Ghorepani. Hotels offer freshly prepared meals upon order, encompassing breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Physical Conditions

The Khopra Danda trek 9-day itinerary package is suitable for beginners to advanced trekkers who can walk at least 5-6 hours a day while carrying a light backpack. Most of the time, altitude sickness is extremely rare, but sometimes, when walking at an altitude, illness may result unexpectedly. It would be ideal to lead the journey steadily.

The Best Season

The ideal trekking seasons for the Khopra Danda Trek are September, October, and November (autumn), as well as March, April, and May (spring). However, in the peak seasons, occasional accommodation issues may arise due to a shortage of tea houses.

What will the weather be like?

The weather for the Khopra Danda Ridge area is pretty good with clear blue skies in March – April – May, and Sep – October – November. Daytime temperatures would be bright, sunny, and warm with a great view of the Annapurna Range, but early morning and evening temperatures will be very chilly above 3700 to 4,827 meters altitude. September through November. Khopra Danda Trek is best from March to May, the spring season. The rest of the month will have changeable weather since the trek is so close to Pokhara, also known as Cherapunji in Nepal, which receives the most rainfall in Nepal.
