The Gorilla Trek is one of Nepal’s most unique and least-explored trekking routes, offering an extraordinary journey through remote mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and regions rich in recent history. Unlike the popular trekking routes in Everest and Annapurna, the Gorilla Trek takes you far from the crowds into the rugged hills of Myagdi, Rukum, Rolpa, and the spectacular Dhorpatan region of western Nepal.
The name “Gorilla Trek” originates from Nepal’s decade-long Maoist insurgency (1996–2006). During this period, the remote mountains and forests along the route served as strategic bases for guerrilla fighters, giving rise to the trek’s distinctive name. Today, these once-conflict-affected areas have transformed into peaceful destinations where trekkers can experience authentic rural life, untouched nature, and genuine local hospitality.
The trek typically begins from Beni, the gateway to western Nepal’s mountain regions. From here, the trail ascends through remote settlements, terraced farmlands, dense forests, and alpine meadows before reaching the high ridges and valleys of Rukum and Rolpa. Over approximately 13 days, trekkers travel through an area rarely visited by international tourists, making it one of Nepal’s true off-the-beaten-path adventures.
The route passes through diverse ethnic communities including Magar, Gurung, Chhetri, Brahmin, Dalit, Newar, and Thakali villages. Along the way, visitors gain valuable insight into local traditions, agriculture, festivals, and lifestyles that have remained largely unchanged for generations.
One of the major attractions of the Gorilla Trek is its incredible variety of scenery. The trail offers stunning panoramas of the Dhaulagiri Massif, Mukut Himal, Gurja Himal, Putha Hiunchuli, Churen Himal, and numerous snow-capped peaks stretching across western Nepal.
Trekkers journey through rhododendron forests, pine-covered hills, high mountain pastures, deep river valleys, waterfalls, caves, and pristine alpine lakes. The route also provides opportunities to observe wildlife, including Himalayan thar, barking deer, pheasants, and various bird species found within the surrounding forests and protected areas.
A highlight of the Gorilla Trek is its passage through the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Nepal’s only hunting reserve and one of the country’s most ecologically diverse protected areas. Covering over 1,300 square kilometers, the reserve is home to blue sheep, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, goral, and many species of birds and alpine flora.
The rolling grasslands, high passes, and remote valleys of Dhorpatan create some of the most spectacular trekking scenery in western Nepal. The reserve also serves as an important corridor connecting the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain regions.
The trek passes through Takam, one of the most culturally significant villages in Myagdi District. Rich in history and local traditions, Takam is known for its ancient defensive structures, archaeological importance, and panoramic mountain views.
The village offers magnificent views of Dhaulagiri and Mukut Himal while showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of the region. Visitors can interact with local families, learn about traditional farming practices, and experience the warm hospitality for which rural Nepal is famous.
The Gorilla Trek combines the comfort of teahouse trekking with the adventure of wilderness camping. The journey starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Beni, passing through lush hills, rivers, and terraced farmlands. Overnight stay in Beni.
The trek begins with a gradual ascent through terraced fields and mixed forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine. Possible wildlife encounters include langurs, barking deer, and a variety of bird species.
