The Mardi Himal trek and Annapurna Base Camp trek are captivating journeys within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Embarking on both treks simultaneously, within a 10-day timeframe, promises an exhilarating adventure. However, it’s important to note that these two routes offer distinct scenic experiences.
Mardi Himal Trek provides panoramic views of the entire Annapurna Himalaya range from the comfort of your balcony. Conversely, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers a closer view of Annapurna South, Himchuli, Fishtail, and the Annapurna peaks.
Both treks begin with a drive from Pokhara lakeside to Kande and a hike to Deurali via the Australian camp. From there, you continue to Annapurna Base Camp through the Mardi Himal Trek, concluding the adventure in Nayapul within 10 days. For those with limited time, it’s possible to undertake each trek separately, requiring 5 days for the Mardi Himal Trek and another 5 days for the base camp trek. Also, there are another 10 days of alternative trails to Annapurna Base Camp via Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.
Mardi Himal is a relatively recent addition to the trekking scene, gaining popularity after 2010. Before that, the area was primarily used as yak and sheep pastures by local villagers. In contrast, the ABC Trek has been a favored route since the 1990s, evolving from a camping trek to an experience with modern tea houses along the way.
Comparatively, the Mardi Himal route retains a more pristine, less commercialized atmosphere. The mountains are within sight but slightly more distant. The ABC, on the other hand, is more crowded but offers intimate mountain views. Both routes, however, promise awe-inspiring Himalayan vistas. The distance between Pokhara and Annapurna Base Camp is 81.1 kilometers, while the distance from Pokhara to Mardi Himal Base Camp is 31.0 kilometers (19 miles).
The Mardi Himal trek takes you along a ridge, passing through forests and yak pastures, with Annapurna Base Camp nestled at the valley’s bottom. The Base Camp itself is a stunning bowl encircled by towering mountains and Annapurna glaciers.
Autumn (September, October, and November): This is the best trekking season when post-monsoon clarity offers exceptional visibility of the surrounding Annapurna region, making it ideal for both treks.

Your guide and porter will pick you up from your hotel in Pokhara at 8:00 AM and drive for about 1 hour to Kande (1,770 m). From Kande, the trek begins with a steady ascent through rhododendron forest and traditional Gurung villages to Australian Camp and then on to Pitam Deurali.

Today’s trail descends briefly to Forest Camp and then gradually climbs through dense oak, maple, and rhododendron forests. The path is peaceful and less crowded, offering occasional glimpses of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail)

The forest begins to thin as you gain altitude. Spectacular views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli dominate the skyline. The trail follows a scenic ridge all the way to High Camp.

Start early to witness sunrise over the Annapurna range. You will hike along the narrow ridge to the viewpoint and continue to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The panorama includes Machhapuchhre, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna. After enjoying the views, return to High Camp.

From Annapurna Base Camp, descend through the dramatic Annapurna Sanctuary, passing Machhapuchhre Base Camp and following the Modi Khola valley. The trail winds through alpine landscapes before entering lush rhododendron and bamboo forests, continuing through Deurali and Bamboo to Sinuwa, a scenic hillside village with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
