The Renjo La Pass (5,360 m / 17,585 ft) is one of the most scenic and peaceful high mountain crossings in the Everest region of Nepal. Located inside Sagarmatha National Park, it connects the beautiful Gokyo Valley with the traditional Sherpa village of Thame, northwest of Namche Bazaar.
Unlike the busy Everest Base Camp trail, Renjo La offers a more remote, less crowded alternative route, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, dramatic landscapes, and authentic Himalayan culture.
Renjo La lies near the historic Nangpa-La Pass, an ancient trade route used by Tibetan traders traveling between Tibet and the Khumbu region. For centuries, yak caravans carried salt, wool, and grain across these high mountain passes to Namche Bazaar.
Walking near Renjo La gives trekkers a sense of stepping into this historical Himalayan corridor, where trade, culture, and mountain life were deeply connected.

Renjo La Pass is part of the famous Everest Three Passes Trek, linking the Gokyo Lakes to the Everest Base Camp route via Cho La Pass. However, many trekkers choose Renjo La specifically because:

This trek is moderately challenging.
At over 5,000 meters, oxygen levels are about 50% of sea level, making every step more physically demanding.
Trekkers are at risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) if they ascend too quickly. Even fit and experienced trekkers can feel breathless and fatigued.
Proper acclimatization in Namche Bazaar or Thame for the clockwise direction, but for the anticlockwise direction, a rest day in Gokyo is highly recommended.
High winds, sudden snow, or fog can reduce visibility, making navigation and footing more difficult.
Temperature drops sharply at higher altitudes; daytime sun may feel warm, but exposure on the pass is cold.
Trekkers must carry their personal gear, snacks, and water while climbing the pass.
Maintaining focus and energy over several hours at high altitude is mentally challenging.
The ascending route (typically from Lungden or Thame toward Renjo La) includes:

The descent (toward Gokyo Valley or Dole) is easier in some ways but has its own challenges:

The Renjo la Pass itinerary typically begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek alongside the captivating Dudh Koshi River, eventually leading to Namche Bazaar. After a day of rest in Namche for acclimatization, trekkers continue their journey towards Renjo La Top, passing through the charming Sherpa village of Thame. This route is known for being less crowded compared to the Tengboche side, offering a more serene experience. Basic accommodation options are available in Lungden, making it a convenient stop along the way. Once the Gokyo Valley is explored, the return trek follows a route back to Dole, Namche, and Lukla, and concludes with a flight back to Kathmandu.
During the Renjo La Trek, there are opportunities to ascend several peaks if one has extra days to spare. Sundar Peak in Thame and Nangkartshang Peak, also known as Lungden Peak, are two notable options. Lungden Peak, standing at an impressive 5,100 meters above sea level, is located along the ridge of the Renjo La pass. As a result, trekkers have the possibility of summiting Lungden Peak on the same day they pass through Lungden village en route to Renjo la. These additional peaks offer an exciting challenge and a chance to elevate the trekking experience through the breathtaking surroundings.
The Sundar Peak is 536o m above sea level and can be summited during your Renjola Pass trek. The Sunder Peak is situated directly above the village of Thame. While this peak is easily accessible, a winding path straight up begins at the gompa above Thame; however, if you have a few extra days, we recommend adding a trip to Sundar Peak to complete the trip.

An early morning flight from Kathmandu takes you into the heart of the Himalayas, offering sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, and surrounding peaks. After landing at Lukla, the trek begins with a gentle descent through Chheplung village and small Sherpa settlements. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing mani walls and prayer wheels before reaching Phakding, a peaceful riverside village.
Hiking: 10.5km • 5 to 6hrs
Elevation gain: +790
The trail continues along the Dudh Koshi valley with multiple suspension bridge crossings, including the iconic Hillary Bridge. After entering Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, the route becomes steeper. The final ascent to Namche is challenging but rewarding, with your first distant views of Mount Everest on clear weather days. Namche Bazaar is the main trading hub of the Khumbu region, filled with bakeries, gear shops, cafes, and Sherpa culture. Over night at the Tea house in Namche Bazaar.

Today is an important acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. Rather than staying completely inactive, you will take a short, gradual hike to a higher elevation and return to Namche to sleep at the same altitude.
After breakfast, hike toward the Sagarmatha National Park Museum and continue toward the Everest View Hotel, located at approximately 3,880m. The walk provides an opportunity to gain some elevation during the day while keeping the pace comfortable. The Everest View Hotel area offers impressive views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde Ri, Khumbila, and other surrounding peaks.
Optional Extension to Khumjung Village: If you are feeling comfortable at altitude, you can extend the hike to Khumjung Village and visit its traditional monastery. You can take a break and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while taking in the mountain scenery. The hike is intended to support acclimatization, so the pace should be slow and relaxed.

Elevation gain: 450 m • Elevation loss: 140 m
Leave the main Everest Base Camp trail and follow the quieter route toward Thame Valley. The trail passes through forests, small settlements, and traditional Sherpa landscapes, with views of the surrounding mountains and Kongde range.
Thame is a historic Sherpa village associated with several well-known mountaineers. Take time to explore the village and its surroundings before settling into your lodge.
Hiking: 5 to 6 hours • 10 km
Elevation gain: 850 m • Elevation loss: 50 m
Continue through the increasingly rugged landscape of the Thame Valley. The trail gradually climbs above the tree line, passing yak pastures, stone shelters, and small settlements.
As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes sparse and the surroundings more alpine. Continue at a steady pace toward Lungdeng, where you will prepare for the following day's crossing of Renjo La Pass.

Elevation gain: 760 m • Elevation loss: 600 m
Start early for the ascent toward Renjo La Pass. The trail becomes steeper as it approaches the pass, and the high altitude makes the climb physically demanding. From Renjo La, there are views of several major Himalayan peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, depending on weather and visibility.
After spending some time at the pass, descend toward the Gokyo Valley. The trail leads past alpine terrain and eventually reaches the turquoise lakes of the Gokyo Valley. Continue to Gokyo village beside Dudh Pokhari, the third Gokyo Lake.
Hiking: 4 to 5 hours • 8 km
Elevation gain: 597 m • Elevation loss: 1,157 m
Begin early with a hike toward Gokyo Ri. The ascent is steep in places and requires a slow, steady pace due to the altitude. From the summit, weather permitting, you can see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and other peaks surrounding the Gokyo Valley.
Return to Gokyo for breakfast before continuing downhill toward Dole. The trail passes through alpine meadows and along streams before gradually returning to areas with more vegetation.
Hiking: 5 to 6 hours • 11 km
Elevation gain: 170 m • Elevation loss: 930 m
Continue descending through rhododendron and pine forests along the Dudh Koshi Valley. The trail passes through villages such as Phortse Tenga, Sanasa, and Khumjung before reaching the familiar route to Namche Bazaar. The long descent is generally manageable, although some sections can be uneven or steep. Arrive in Namche and enjoy the evening at your lodge.

Elevation gain: 100 m • Elevation loss: 740 m
Begin the final trekking day with a descent from Namche toward the Dudh Koshi River. Continue through the Sagarmatha National Park, passing Jorsalle, Monjo, and Phakding along the way.
Follow the trail through the valley and continue toward Lukla. The final section includes several uphill and downhill stretches, making this a relatively long walking day. Arrive in Lukla and spend the evening with your trekking team before the return flight.

Take a morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu or Ramechhap, depending on the current flight schedule and operating conditions. If you arrive at Ramechhap, continue by road to Kathmandu.
