Panch Pokhari Trek 13 days Itinerary

The Panch Pokhari Trek is a renowned trekking route situated in the scenic Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal. Known as the “Trek of the Five Ponds,” it derives its name from the five sacred ponds (Panch Pokhari) nestled within the area. This trek takes you through some of Nepal’s most breathtaking and remote landscapes, offering mesmerizing views of the Himalayan range and a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and lifestyle.

Located in the eastern part of Nepal, the Panch Pokhari trek offers a spectacular panorama and an off-the-beaten-path adventure, allowing you to experience the isolated and traditional farming villages surrounded by the picturesque Himalayan scenery of the Sindhupalchok district. Trekking along the high ridges will lead you to the sacred Panch Pokhari, situated at an altitude of 4,160 meters above sea level, which holds immense religious significance.

During the Panch Pokhari Trek, you will witness the towering peaks of the Jugal Himal range and encounter the magnificent blue-colored Panch Pokhari, aptly named due to the presence of five pristine ponds within the lake. These sites hold deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists, making them important pilgrimage destinations.

The journey commences from Chautara, which is easily accessible via a 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu. From Chautara, you will traverse picturesque villages, and dense forests, and conquer several high passes before arriving at the Panch Pokhari area. Along the way, you will be enchanted by the beauty of cascading waterfalls, terraced fields, and traditional Nepali houses.

The trail passes through stunning locations such as Lami Danda, Kami Danda, Sharpe Dhunga, and Norsingpati, offering awe-inspiring mountain vistas, enchanting pine forests, verdant terraced fields, and rural villages inhabited by followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. Marvel at the breathtaking views of the Langtang and Jugal Himalayan ranges during your Panch Pokhari Trek, starting from Chautara.

The Panch Pokhari region is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Hindus, attracting numerous pilgrims who seek spiritual solace. A notable event is the Janai Purnima festival held in August when devotees flock to take a dip in the holy ponds, believing it will cleanse their sins. The sight of the five ponds, embraced by snow-capped peaks, is truly awe-inspiring.

The trek typically spans over 13 days, with the best time to embark on this adventure being during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. While the trek is moderately challenging, prior trekking experience and good physical fitness are recommended.

Devotees and pilgrims visit the Panch Pokhari area, particularly during the month of Janai Purnima, to worship and cleanse themselves in the sacred ponds. It is believed that bathing in the Panch Pokhari helps purify the spirit and wash away negative karma. The religious significance of this practice brings devotees together every August during the Full Moon (Janai Purnima) as part of the Lunar calendar’s religious celebrations.

In addition to the Panch Pokhari Trek, there are trekking trails that connect the Langtang area with the Panch Pokhari Trek, such as the Tilman Pass Trek, providing further opportunities to explore and experience the wonders of the region.

Alpine pastures

The Panch Pokhari region transforms into a lush and picturesque landscape during the monsoon season, making it an ideal grazing ground for cattle. The abundance of green grass in the area attracts Yak and sheep from Chautara village and Sherpathang village, making it one of the most important pastures for these animals. The scenic drives to Chautara village, located just 37 kilometers from Kathmandu and near the border between Tibet and Nepal, offer breathtaking views and provide access to this region.

Our expertise lies in organizing the Panch Pokhari Trek exclusively through camping arrangements, ensuring an authentic and immersive experience. Our team consists of expert Sherpa guides, dedicated porters, skilled cooks, and a kitchen crew to cater to all your needs. Since there are no tea houses along the trail until Sermathang, you have the option to stay at a tea house if you prefer, following the Sermathang route through Tarchi Ghyang, Kutungsang, and Chisapani. This section of the trek is known as the Helambu trek. However, our itinerary concludes at Melamchi Bazaar, from where we drive back to Kathmandu.

The Panch Pokhari trek stands out as one of the few remaining places in Nepal that remains untouched by roads and lacks tea house access. It offers a unique eco-nature camping experience away from the crowds. Immerse yourself in the beauty of hidden valleys, alpine pastures, rhododendron forests, and Himalayan pine forests. This trek allows you to truly connect with nature while enjoying the tranquility of this remote location.

Our commitment is to provide you with an unforgettable adventure that takes you off the beaten path, allowing you to appreciate the unspoiled natural wonders of the Panch Pokhari region.

The weather of Panch Pokhari

The Panch Pokhari Trek offers excellent visibility of the mountain range during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) seasons. During this time, the skies are clear with a vivid blue backdrop adorned by scattered white clouds. It is the ideal period to embark on this trek and witness the majestic mountains in all their glory. However, it’s important to avoid the monsoon season (June to September) due to heavy rainfall, which can make reaching the area challenging. Similarly, the winter months (December to February) bring harsh weather conditions and heavy snowfall, making it less suitable for trekking.

To ensure an exceptional camping experience during your Nepal Camping Trek, our Nepal Wilderness Trekking team will lead the way. We have a dedicated team of experienced campers who will provide all the necessary camping gear, ensuring your comfort throughout the trek. Our professional cooks will prepare delicious organic meals, allowing you to savor the local flavors. It’s worth noting that our guides and porters are often from the same region, possessing extensive knowledge about the trekking trails, local communities, cultural heritage, historical significance, and the diverse flora and fauna found in the area.

Undertaking the Panch Pokhari Trek not only allows you to witness Nepal’s stunning natural beauty but also presents an opportunity for physical challenge and personal growth. It is a unique adventure that provides insight into the country’s rich culture and traditions. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that you have a memorable and rewarding experience as you immerse yourself in the wonders of the Panch Pokhari region.
