Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Trekking is essentially day hiking and doesn't require any special training. However, good physical condition, a love of walking, and a desire to enjoy mountain views and village life are essential.
These treks are suitable for walkers looking for something more challenging and energetic. Hill-walking experience is desirable, with longer days and higher elevations.
Since the terrain can be hard and the days long, hikers should be in good physical condition and have previous mountain walking experience. High passes and extended trekking days may be involved.

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a spectacular 19-day journey through one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan regions. Combining the culturally rich Tsum Valley with the classic Manaslu Circuit, this trek takes you through ancient Buddhist villages, centuries-old monasteries, dramatic Budhi Gandaki gorges, alpine landscapes, and the challenging Larkya La Pass.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek combines the remote beauty of the Manaslu region with the spiritual and cultural heritage of the sacred Tsum Valley. This 19-day adventure follows the Budhi Gandaki River through deep gorges, forests, waterfalls, traditional villages, and high Himalayan landscapes before reaching the dramatic Larkya La Pass.
The journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola and gradually enters the Manaslu Conservation Area. From Lokpa, the trail turns into the secluded Tsum Valley, where trekkers encounter traditional stone villages, Buddhist monasteries, mani walls, chortens, prayer wheels, and sacred meditation sites.
The Tsum Valley section includes visits to Mu Gompa, Dhephu Doma Gompa, and Milarepa’s Cave, while the surrounding mountains provide impressive views of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, Himalchuli, and Manaslu.
After exploring Tsum Valley, the route reconnects with the main Manaslu Circuit at Lokpa and continues through Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Sama Gaon. An acclimatization day at Sama Gaon provides time to rest and explore attractions such as Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake, or Pungyen Gompa.
The final section takes you through Samdo and Dharamsala before the challenging crossing of Larkya La Pass at approximately 5,100 meters. From the pass, the trail descends toward Bimthang and Dharapani before returning to Kathmandu.
This trek is ideal for travelers looking for a combination of remote mountain scenery, Tibetan-influenced Buddhist culture, traditional Himalayan villages, and a challenging high-altitude adventure away from Nepal’s busiest trekking routes.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek offers much more than a high-altitude walking adventure. It combines spectacular Himalayan scenery with the unique culture and spiritual traditions of two remote mountain regions.
Sacred Tsum Valley
Tsum Valley is renowned for its Tibetan-influenced Buddhist culture, traditional villages, ancient monasteries, and sacred meditation sites. The valley provides an opportunity to experience a quieter side of the Himalayas where traditional customs remain an important part of everyday life.
Ancient Monasteries and Sacred Sites
The route passes several important religious and cultural sites, including Mu Gompa, Dhephu Doma Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Milarepa’s Cave. These sites add a strong cultural and spiritual dimension to the trek.
Spectacular Manaslu Mountain Scenery
As the trek progresses toward the upper Budhi Gandaki Valley, the mountain scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Trekkers can enjoy views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II from different points along the route.
Larkya La Pass
Crossing Larkya La is the major high-altitude challenge of the trek. The pass provides spectacular Himalayan views and connects the upper Manaslu region with the Bimthang side of the circuit.
Remote Himalayan Villages
The route passes through villages such as Chumling, Chhokang Paro, Nile, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Sama Gaon, Samdo, and Bimthang. Staying in these mountain communities provides an authentic experience of Himalayan life.
A Less-Crowded Alternative
Compared with Nepal’s most popular trekking routes, the Manaslu Tsum Valley route offers a more remote experience, making it particularly appealing to trekkers who want mountain scenery, cultural encounters, and quieter trails.
The best seasons for the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods generally provide better trekking conditions, clearer mountain views, and more comfortable temperatures.
Spring: March to May
Spring brings warmer temperatures, improving trail conditions, and blooming rhododendrons in the lower and middle elevations. Mountain views are generally good, making this a beautiful time to explore both Tsum Valley and the Manaslu region.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is one of the most popular periods for trekking in Nepal. Following the monsoon, the atmosphere is generally clearer, mountain visibility is excellent, and the trails are suitable for long-distance trekking.
Winter: December to February
Winter trekking is possible, but temperatures become very cold at higher elevations and snow can affect the Larkya La section. The pass and higher trails may become difficult depending on weather and snow conditions.
Monsoon: June to August
June to August is generally less suitable for this trek because of monsoon rainfall. Lower sections of the route can experience wet and slippery trails, landslides, and transportation disruptions, while cloud and rain can reduce mountain visibility.
Recommended months: March, April, May, September, October, and November.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek passes through an extraordinary range of Himalayan environments. The scenery changes dramatically as the trail rises from the lower Budhi Gandaki Valley toward the high alpine terrain of Manaslu.
Major Mountains Seen Along the Route
Changing Landscapes
The trek begins among terraced farmland, forests, and river valleys before entering the narrower Budhi Gandaki gorge. Higher sections feature pine and rhododendron forests, traditional Himalayan villages, alpine meadows, yak pastures, and glacial landscapes.
Near Sama Gaon and Samdo, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the trail reaches higher elevations. The landscape around Dharamsala and Larkya La is dominated by rugged mountains, snow, glaciers, and high-altitude terrain.
After crossing Larkya La, the trail descends toward Bimthang through alpine meadows and eventually reaches forests and lower mountain villages.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek covers a wide range of elevations, from the lower Budhi Gandaki Valley to the high point of Larkya La Pass at approximately 5,100 meters.

Highest Point
The highest point of the trek is Larkya La Pass, at approximately 5,100 meters. The pass-crossing day is also the longest and most demanding trekking day, making proper acclimatization and preparation particularly important.
Note: Daily walking distances in kilometers should be added once the exact route measurements used by the company are confirmed.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a challenging high-altitude trek that requires good physical fitness, endurance, and preparation. The route combines long trekking days, rugged mountain terrain, significant elevation changes, remote teahouse accommodation, and the crossing of Larkya La Pass at approximately 5,100 meters.
You do not need to be a professional mountaineer, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours a day on uneven and sometimes steep terrain.
Several factors contribute to the difficulty of this trek:
The trek is suitable for travelers who:
Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful, although it is not essential for well-prepared trekkers who follow a gradual itinerary and listen carefully to their guide.
Preparation should ideally begin several weeks before departure. Focus on activities that improve cardiovascular endurance and leg strength, such as:
It is also useful to practice walking with a daypack before arriving in Nepal so your body becomes accustomed to carrying your personal belongings during the trek.
Altitude is one of the most important considerations on the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek. The itinerary gradually gains elevation and includes an acclimatization day at Sama Gaon (3,520 m) before continuing toward Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larkya La.
The acclimatization day at Sama Gaon can be used for rest or an optional hike to destinations such as Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake, or Pungyen Gompa.
After Sama Gaon, the route continues gradually upward:
Sama Gaon → Samdo → Dharamsala → Larkya La
This gradual progression gives trekkers additional time to adjust before reaching the highest point of the trek.
Altitude-related symptoms should never be ignored. If serious symptoms develop, the appropriate response may be to stop ascending and descend to a lower elevation.
The crossing of Larkya La is the toughest section of the itinerary. You start early from Dharamsala and climb gradually toward the pass before making a long descent to Bimthang.
The combination of high altitude, cold temperatures, uneven terrain, and an 8–9 hour trekking day makes preparation particularly important.
With proper acclimatization, appropriate pacing, suitable equipment, and experienced trekking support, the Larkya La crossing can be one of the most rewarding experiences of the entire Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek passes through restricted and protected areas, so trekkers need several permits before starting the journey. These permits are arranged through a registered trekking agency and are included in our trekking package.
| Permit | Purpose | Listed Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Manaslu Restricted Area Permit | Required for trekking through the restricted Manaslu region | USD 100/week (Sept–Nov); USD 75 (Dec–Aug) |
| Tsum Valley Special Permit | Required for entering the restricted Tsum Valley | USD 40/week (Sept–Nov); USD 30 (Dec–Aug) |
| Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) | Required for the Manaslu Conservation Area | USD 30 |
| Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) | Required for the Annapurna Conservation Area section after Larkya La | USD 30 |
| TIMS Card | Trekker registration and trekking management | USD 20 |
The Manaslu Restricted Area Permit is required for the restricted section of the Manaslu trekking route. Because this is a controlled trekking area, the permit must be processed through an authorized trekking agency.
The Tsum Valley Special Permit is required for entering the restricted Tsum Valley. This permit allows trekkers to explore the valley’s traditional villages, monasteries, and cultural sites.
The route passes through both the Manaslu Conservation Area and, after crossing Larkya La, the Annapurna Conservation Area. Therefore, both conservation-area permits are required for the complete itinerary.
The TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Card is part of the required trekking documentation for the route.
For this restricted-area trek, the required permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency. Our team handles the necessary permit arrangements before you begin the trek, so you can focus on preparing for your journey.
Important: Permit fees and government regulations can change. The applicable permit requirements and charges at the time of your trek will be confirmed during the booking process.
Accommodation on the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is provided in local teahouses and mountain lodges along the trekking route. These accommodations are simple and comfortable, offering trekkers a place to rest, eat, and recover after each day of walking.
The accommodation becomes more basic as the trail moves deeper into Tsum Valley and toward the higher elevations of the Manaslu Circuit.
The lower sections of the route generally have more accommodation choices, while villages such as Nile, Mu Gompa, Samdo, and Dharamsala have more limited facilities because of their remote locations and higher elevations.
The Tsum Valley section offers a particularly traditional teahouse experience. Villages such as Chumling, Chhokang Paro, Nile, and Mu Gompa have small locally operated lodges where you can experience the hospitality and lifestyle of the mountain communities.
As the trek climbs above Sama Gaon toward Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larkya La, temperatures become colder and facilities become increasingly basic.
Dharamsala (Larke Phedi) is the final overnight stop before crossing Larkya La. Because of its high elevation and remote location, accommodation here is particularly simple and limited.
We recommend carrying a sleeping bag suitable for cold Himalayan conditions. A sleeping bag and down jacket can be provided if you do not have your own equipment.
Private rooms may be available at some lower-elevation teahouses, depending on availability and the number of trekkers. At higher elevations, accommodation options are limited, so twin-sharing or shared facilities should be expected.
Wi-Fi, electricity, charging facilities, and hot showers may be available at some teahouses, particularly in larger villages, but availability becomes less reliable at higher elevations.
These services may also involve an additional charge.
For this reason, it is recommended to carry a power bank and keep your electronic equipment protected from cold and moisture.
The accommodation is part of the Manaslu Tsum Valley experience. Rather than expecting hotel-style facilities, trekkers should be prepared for simple mountain lodging, local food, shared facilities, and genuine interaction with the communities along the route.
Your Manaslu Tsum Valley adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward Machha Khola. The journey passes through Arughat and Soti Khola, following Nepal's winding hill roads through terraced farmland, rivers, forests, and traditional villages.
As the road gradually enters the Budhi Gandaki Valley, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly rugged and mountainous. After arriving at Machha Khola, check into your teahouse and prepare for the trekking days ahead.

Overnight: Teahouse in Chhokang Paro
Altitude: 3,010 m
Walking: 5–6 hours
Today's relatively shorter trekking day takes you farther into Upper Tsum Valley.
Along the route, visit Milarepa's Cave (Piren Phu), a sacred meditation site associated with the famous Tibetan Buddhist saint Milarepa. The cave is an important cultural and spiritual attraction containing traditional religious artwork and prayer flags.
Continue toward Nile, one of the last settlements before reaching Mu Gompa.
Overnight: Teahouse in Nile
Altitude: 3,361 m
Walking: 4–5 hours
A shorter but increasingly high-altitude walk takes you to Mu Gompa, the largest and one of the most important monasteries in Tsum Valley.
The trail climbs through an increasingly barren Himalayan landscape. Mu Gompa sits in a spectacular remote setting surrounded by high mountains and close to the Tibetan border.
Spend the afternoon exploring the monastery and its surroundings while allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.
Overnight: Teahouse / Lodge near Mu Gompa
Altitude: 3,700 m
Walking: 3–4 hours
Spend the morning exploring the spiritual surroundings of Mu Gompa and nearby Dhephu Doma Gompa.
After exploring the area, retrace the trail through Upper Tsum Valley toward Chhokang Paro. The descent provides a different perspective of the surrounding mountains and traditional villages.
Overnight: Teahouse in Chhokang Paro
Walking: 5–6 hours
Leave Chhokang Paro and descend through Tsum Valley toward Lokpa.
Retrace sections of the trail through traditional settlements, monasteries, forests, and scenic mountain landscapes. This is a longer descent, providing time to appreciate the cultural and natural highlights you experienced while ascending.
Overnight: Teahouse in Lokpa
Walking: 6–7 hours
Today you leave Tsum Valley and reconnect with the main Manaslu Circuit.
Descend toward the Budhi Gandaki River before continuing through forests and across suspension bridges. The landscape gradually changes as you move deeper into the Manaslu Circuit.
Deng is a small Himalayan settlement with strong Tibetan cultural influences and is an important overnight stop on the route toward the upper Manaslu region.
Overnight: Teahouse in Deng
Altitude: 1,860 m
Walking: 6–7 hours
The trail gradually climbs through forests and traditional villages toward Namrung.
Along the way, pass through Bihi Phedi and Ghap, where mani walls, chortens, prayer wheels, and Buddhist cultural features become increasingly common.
As you approach Namrung, the Himalayan views become more impressive, with glimpses of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Manaslu.
Overnight: Teahouse in Namrung
Altitude: 2,630 m
Walking: 6–7 hours
Continue toward the upper Manaslu region through beautiful mountain villages and forests.
Pass through Sho and Lihi before reaching Lho, one of the most attractive settlements on the Manaslu Circuit. The village is known for its large monastery, traditional architecture, and spectacular views toward Mount Manaslu.
Overnight: Teahouse in Lho
Altitude: 3,180 m
Walking: 4–5 hours
Today's trail continues gradually upward through the upper Budhi Gandaki Valley.
The surrounding landscape becomes more alpine as you approach Sama Gaon. Along the route, enjoy increasingly close views of Manaslu and surrounding glaciers.
Sama Gaon is the largest settlement in the upper valley and an important cultural and acclimatization point.
Overnight: Teahouse in Sama Gaon
Altitude: 3,520 m
Walking: 4–5 hours
Today is reserved for acclimatization before continuing toward the higher elevations of Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larkya La.
You can rest in Sama Gaon or take an optional day hike to one of the area's major attractions, such as:
These excursions provide spectacular mountain scenery while allowing you to spend additional time at altitude before the Larkya La section.
Overnight: Teahouse in Sama Gaon
Altitude: 3,520 m

Leave Sama Gaon and follow the trail through wide alpine landscapes and yak pastures.
The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you gain altitude. The route leads to Samdo, a traditional Tibetan-influenced settlement located close to the Nepal–Tibet border.
Take time to rest and prepare for the higher-altitude days ahead.
Overnight: Teahouse in Samdo
Altitude: 3,875 m
Walking: 4–5 hours
Today's trail climbs gradually toward Dharamsala, also known as Larke Phedi, the final overnight stop before crossing Larkya La.
Cross the wooden bridge over the Budhi Gandaki and continue through increasingly rugged high-altitude terrain.
Because the following day is the most demanding section of the trek, the afternoon should be used for rest, hydration, and preparation for the Larkya La crossing.
Overnight: Teahouse / Lodge at Dharamsala
Altitude: 4,460 m
Walking: 4–5 hours
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek.
Start early from Dharamsala and gradually ascend toward Larkya La Pass, the highest point of the journey at approximately 5,100 meters.
The high-altitude crossing offers spectacular views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, and other surrounding Himalayan peaks.
After reaching the pass, begin the long descent through glacial terrain, rocky sections, and alpine meadows toward Bimthang.
Reaching Bimthang marks the successful completion of the Larkya La crossing and the beginning of the descent toward the lower Manaslu region.
Overnight: Teahouse in Bimthang
Highest Point: Larkya La, ~5,100 m
Walking: 8–9 hours
After the demanding Larkya La crossing, continue descending toward Dharapani.

Arrive at Dharapani, marking the end of the trekking section of the Manaslu Tsum Valley journey.
Overnight: Teahouse in Dharapani
Altitude: 1,860 m
Walking: 7–8 hours
Your Himalayan adventure concludes with the journey from Dharapani toward Kathmandu.
Travel by road to Besisahar before continuing toward Kathmandu by local bus or private vehicle. The drive passes through Nepal's beautiful hill landscapes, river valleys, terraced farmland, and traditional settlements.
