Walk Through Nepal’s Living Countryside

After breakfast in Nagarkot, the hiking trail gradually descends through peaceful forests and rural landscapes toward Changunarayan.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this hike is the opportunity to witness authentic village life that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Farmers continue working the terraced fields using traditional methods, children walk to local schools along stone-paved paths, and villagers welcome visitors with genuine Nepali hospitality.

Unlike Nepal’s high-altitude trekking routes, this hike provides a cultural experience just as memorable as its mountain scenery.

Throughout the journey, you’ll pass:

  • Traditional Tamang and Newar settlements
  • Beautiful terraced rice and millet fields
  • Pine and rhododendron forests
  • Quiet country trails
  • Small temples and local shrines
  • Scenic viewpoints overlooking the Kathmandu Valley

Every season transforms the landscape. Spring paints the hillsides with blooming rhododendrons, summer turns the countryside lush green, autumn offers crystal-clear mountain views, and winter provides crisp skies ideal for photography.

A Paradise for Nature Lovers and Bird Watchers

The forests surrounding Nagarkot and Telkot are rich in biodiversity and home to numerous bird species. Early morning hikers often spot colorful Himalayan birds while enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature. Because much of the trail follows forest ridges away from busy roads, the hike feels remarkably quiet despite being so close to Kathmandu.

The combination of fresh mountain air, gentle forest trails, and panoramic scenery makes this one of the most relaxing outdoor experiences in the Kathmandu Valley.

Nagarkot to Changunarayan Trek: Ancient Temples and Scenic Countryside

From Nagarkot Sunrise view, the trail descends through terraced fields and forests to the ancient town of Changunarayan temple, which is home to one of the oldest Hindu temples in the Kathmandu Valley. The hike concludes at the magnificent Changunarayan Temple, one of Nepal’s greatest architectural and religious treasures.

The Best Places to Stay and Eat

We lead the Nagarkot Sunrise hike, but if you plan to stay overnight during the high season, plan and book your room in advance, as hotels often become full later in the day. When you arrive later in the day, you may have to take whatever you can get, which might mean a room without a view. In the afternoon, you will have a better selection of rooms if you arrive before the tourist buses. The hotels are often booked by agents in Kathmandu, who charge inflated prices. The most efficient way to book a room is to call the lodge or hotel directly. Budget hotels usually do not have hot water or heating. In the winter, you might want to bring a sleeping bag.
