Kala Patthar Trek is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Everest region, offering an unforgettable Himalayan experience without requiring a technical climb. Rising to 5,644 meters (18,519 feet), Kala Patthar provides one of the closest and most impressive panoramic views of Mount Everest (8,849 m), along with Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
The trek takes you deep into the legendary Khumbu region, where you can experience Sherpa culture, traditional mountain villages, Buddhist monasteries, and dramatic landscapes shaped by glaciers and towering peaks. The final ascent from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar is challenging because of the high altitude and thin air, but the spectacular mountain scenery makes every step worthwhile.
The Everest Kala Pathar Trek takes you through the heart of the Himalayas; the trails follow the Dudhkoshi river banks, through Sherpa villages, and through mountain scenery that is characterized by rare species of flora and fauna. While walking under the gigantic Himalayas, you will be able to experience the unique culture of the Sherpa people, Buddhist monasteries that date back centuries, Chortens, Mani walls, and hardy Yaks. It is not so uncommon for trials to cross the suspension bridge over the raging river regularly.
There is a bit of fear and a lot of joy associated with it. You may be able to see wild animals such as the Himalayan Goat (Thar/Jharal), Musk Deer, colorful birds “Daphe” Nepal National Birds, and other species during the Kalapatthar Trekking. Snow leopards live in Khumbu, which is also the home of the mysterious yeti.
As you gradually gain altitude, the landscape changes from pine, fir, and rhododendron forests to alpine meadows, rocky terrain, glaciers, and snow-covered mountains. The trail itself becomes an important part of the experience, with every section offering something different to discover.
The next morning, begin the hike from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar early morning, using a headlamp or flashlight. The ascent takes about two hours, while the descent takes around 1.5 hours. Although the distance from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar is only about 1.2 km, the high altitude and thin air make the climb physically demanding, so walk slowly and steadily.
From Gorakshep, follow the trail toward the northern end of the settlement and ascend Kala Patthar along a well-established path. Start early while it is still dark, put on your warm layers, switch on your headlamp, and begin the uphill climb. Although the trail may look unclear in the darkness, you can easily follow the well-trodden route.
Once you reach the summit of Kala Patthar, take some time to rest and enjoy one of the most spectacular Himalayan views. Reaching the summit around sunrise makes the experience even more memorable.
After spending some time at the summit, descend to Gorakshep, have breakfast, and continue your long trek toward Pheriche.
During the Kala Patthar trek, the last night will be spent in Gorakshep, situated at an elevation of approximately 5,164 meters (16,942 feet) above sea level. This small, high-altitude settlement serves as a base for trekkers aiming to summit Kala Patthar, which stands at about 5,545 meters (18,192 feet). After a challenging day of trekking, you can rest and recharge in Gorakshep before making the final ascent to Kala Patthar.

The Kala Patthar Trek is challenging but achievable for trekkers with good fitness and proper acclimatization. The main difficulty comes not from technical climbing but from the high altitude, steep ascent, cold temperatures, and reduced oxygen levels. The final climb from Gorakshep to the summit at 5,644 meters (18,519 feet) can feel demanding, particularly during the early-morning ascent.
Altitude is the biggest challenge on the Kala Patthar Trek. At 5,644 meters, the air contains significantly less oxygen than at sea level. You may experience breathlessness, fatigue, headaches, or dizziness. Proper acclimatization and a slow, steady pace are essential.
The trail from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar climbs steadily over rocky and uneven terrain. Although the distance is relatively short, the steep sections and altitude make the ascent much harder than it appears.
Most trekkers begin the Kala Patthar climb before sunrise to enjoy the spectacular Himalayan views. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially in November through February. Warm layers, insulated gloves, a hat, and a good down jacket are essential.
The trail consists mainly of rocks, gravel, and rough mountain terrain. Snow and ice can cover sections of the trail during winter, making the climb more slippery. Good trekking boots and trekking poles can provide additional stability.
Weather conditions in the Everest region can change rapidly. Clouds, strong winds, snowfall, and poor visibility can make the summit climb more difficult. Starting early also gives you a better chance of enjoying clear mountain views.
You do not need mountaineering or technical climbing experience for Kala Patthar, but you should have good cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and uphill training before the trek can make the experience considerably easier.
The combination of steep terrain, cold temperatures, thin air, and slow progress can make the final ascent mentally demanding. Maintaining a comfortable pace and taking short breaks can help you reach the summit safely.
The best time to visit Kala Patthar is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). These seasons offer the best combination of clear skies, excellent mountain visibility, and relatively stable weather.

Early morning scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After meeting your guide and porter team, begin the trek with a gentle descent through small Sherpa villages and pine forests along the Dudh Koshi River.

Follow the Dudh Koshi River through the valley, crossing several suspension bridges along the way. Enter Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, where park entry formalities are completed, and continue through Jorsalle.From Jorsalle, the trail gradually becomes steeper as it follows the river toward the Hillary Bridge, one of the route’s major suspension bridges. After crossing the bridge, the trail climbs steadily through the forest toward Namche Bazaar. The final section is a sustained uphill ascent and can feel demanding due to the increasing altitude.

Today is an important acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. Rather than staying completely inactive, you will take a short, gradual hike to a higher elevation and return to Namche to sleep at the same altitude.
After breakfast, hike toward the Sagarmatha National Park Museum and continue toward the Everest View Hotel, located at approximately 3,880m. The walk provides an opportunity to gain some elevation during the day while keeping the pace comfortable. The Everest View Hotel area offers impressive views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde Ri, Khumbila, and other surrounding peaks.
Optional Extension to Khumjung Village: If you are feeling comfortable at altitude, you can extend the hike to Khumjung Village and visit its traditional monastery.
You can take a break and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while taking in the mountain scenery. The hike is intended to support acclimatization, so the pace should be slow and relaxed.

Leave Namche Bazaar and follow the scenic trail along the hillside toward Kyangjuma, with excellent views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Lhotse on clear days. The trail is mostly gradual at first, with some short uphill and downhill sections.
Continue through rhododendron and pine forests before descending toward the Dudh Koshi River at Phunki Tenga. From here, the trail climbs steadily and sometimes steeply through the forest to Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery and surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.

Leave Tengboche and descend through rhododendron and pine forests toward Deboche before crossing the Imja Khola. The trail then climbs gradually through the alpine landscape toward Pangboche, with views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other surrounding peaks. Continue through the upper Imja Valley, passing traditional stone-walled fields and yak pastures before reaching Dingboche, a small high-altitude settlement.

Spend another important acclimatization day at high altitude. A recommended hike is to Nagarjun Hill (about 5,000 m), which rewards you with panoramic views of Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. Overnight stay at the same lodge in Dingboche.

This morning you're back on the trail, getting close to Base Camp with every step. Begin with a climb at a leisurely pace through alpine terrain leads to Thukla, where a memorial site honors climbers who lost their lives on Everest. From here, the trail continues gently toward Lobuche, located beneath dramatic peaks like Nuptse and Pumori. Only one more night until your goal.

Follow the trail through the rugged glacial landscape toward GorakShep. The route gradually becomes more rocky as it passes alongside the Khumbu Glacier and its moraine. After reaching GorakShep, take a short break before continuing toward Everest Base Camp.
The trail to Base Camp crosses rocky and glacial terrain, with views of the Khumbu Glacier, surrounding peaks, and the famous Khumbu Icefall area. Trail conditions can vary, particularly around the glacier, so the pace should be steady and careful.
After spending some time at Everest Base Camp, retrace the same route back to GorakShep for the night.

Start before dawn from GorakShep and climb the steep, rocky trail to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) for sunrise. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After sunrise, descend to GorakShep for breakfast, then continue downhill through Lobuche and Thukla to Pheriche

Descend through rhododendron and pine forests to Phunki Tenga, then climb gradually back to Kyangjuma and Namche Bazaar. This is a comfortable day to rest, enjoy bakeries, and reflect on the journey so far.

Retrace your steps through Monjo, Phakding, and the surrounding villages. A final gradual ascent leads to Lukla, where you celebrate the completion of your trek with your crew.
